With the launch of the fantastic Olaplex Bonding Oil No. 7 you may be wondering what are the differences with the similar sounding sister product Olaplex No. 6 Bond Smoother? 

As No.6 & No. 7 are both essentially styling products, that aim to repair and smooth, we thought we would explain the differences and how how to use each product.

Olaplex No. 6 is a leave-in reparative styling cream that eliminates frizz, hydrates & protects all hair types. However, as it is a cream it is more suited for curly and thicker hair rather than an oil.

We find that the No. 6 as it is highly concentrated, can weigh down fine hair if too much is applied - it's ok if you get the quantity right but have to use sparingly. 

No. 6 is a great product to add before blow drying as it will really get into your hair to hydrate and smooth and also speed up blow dry times. This helps minimise damage. It will also additionally protect your hair as it also contains a heat protectant - both from hot tools and UV rays. It will help to eliminate frizz for up to 72 hours.

Olaplex No.7 is a ultra light weight reparative styling oil that is also highly-concentrated but comparatively weightless. No. 7 will dramatically increase shine and softness.

It will add beautiful colour vibrancy and make that new colour pop! It is great to use on those "second days" to banish dullness. Plus as it is an oil you can use to prime your hair and detangle any knots after washing.

It also provides heat protection and so is great to use prior to blow drying or styling. It also protects fro UV rays.

What Olaplex Products Are Best For Curly Hair?

The Olaplex range is ideal for curly hair as it will condition, protect and repair your curls that are more prone to frizz then other types of hair. Even the way you sleep and the drag of your pillow can create damage to your curls so a regime that combines moisture and repair is key.

If you regularly style your curls with heat tools or add colour through chemical processing, you may find damage also occurring that affects the health of your hair. Curly hair needs to be moisturised and nourished to keep the curls beautiful and luscious, not frizzy and dry.

Step 1 Olaplex No.4 Shampoo

Olaplex Shampoo is great as it is full of natural ingredients and most importantly it is sulphate free which is great as sulphates will dry out your curls.

N°4 Shampoo repairs and protects hair from everyday stresses — including damaged hair, split ends, and frizz — by re-linking broken bonds. Leaves hair easier to manage, shinier and healthier with each use.

Step 2 Olaplex No.5 Conditioner

If your hair is more needing moisture than repair than we suggest a weekly treat of the Olaplex No.8 Moisture Mask. It has the Olaplex bond repair active ingredient but it is designed to really penetrate your curls more than any other product. You can also use No.8 as a great detangler - simply add to wet hair after shampooing then detangle and rinse out your hair ready for styling.

Once you have your hair in great condition, the next trick for your curls is styling. The first tip is to get to know how much product you need to apply as you may think you need more than recommended if you have thick long curls. Olaplex is super concentrated so start off by using the recommended amount and work up from there if you need, making sure you are applying to damp hair.

Step 3 Olaplex No.6

No.6 is ideal for thick curly hair as it is designed to really sink in to your curls to eliminate frizz for up to 72 hours and you can use as a leave in cream that will both style and repair your hair. Apply as always to damp hair and then you can let it dry naturally, which is preferred for natural curly hair, and if you use a hair dryer try and use a diffuser.

Step 4 Olaplex No.7

No.7 is a beautiful oil that adds heat protection and shine to your curls as part of your styling regime. It also works wonders together with No.6 as a cocktail of Olaplex goodness.

Let's Eliminate Frizzy Hair!

IMPORTANT – There are many things that can exacerbate frizzy hair which we will touch on but there is one fundamental that if you can grasp you will be well on the way to winning the frizz game! Frizzy Hair is due to your hair being dry and lacking moisture. Most of the causes of frizzy hair are actually due to your hair drying out so if we can combat this and keep your hair healthy and well hydrated we eliminate the frizz!

To fully understand what happens we need to get a little technical – when your hair is dry or damaged the hair cuticle is rough and “opens up” and this open cuticle will grab at any moisture which equals frizz. We want a nice smooth healthy cuticle which can deal with moisture and not become frizzy.

Below we list the top 10 causes of frizzy hair (or as we now know 10 things that strip your hair of moisture!) Hopefully some of these you can easily identify with and you may realise they have snuck into your hair routine.

It is likely that if you are really determined to rid the frizz it will be a number of things you need to change buy hey it may just mean a slight tweak or swap out a habit or product and you will soon see great results! 

1. Long Hot Showers if you stand under the shower for too long and the water is too hot you will start your day by stripping your hair of essential oils. When washing your hair go for luke-warm short showers

2. Ruffling Dry with Towel – if your towel is too abrasive you can damage your hair which can cause frizz. Try using a microfiber towel or not using a towel at all and leaving it to air dry

3. Styling Hair without Thermal Protection can lead to damage. Apply styling product with thermal protection to wet hair from roots to tip. Applying a  product with thermal protection into wet hair is essential as it prevents extra damage caused by your hairdryer or styling irons.

4. Brushing – a cheap brush that pulls at your hair will not help us prevent frizz. Find a bush that has good quality bristles that does not pull at your hair.

5. Over Shampooing – if you shampoo every day you may be stripping those essential hair oils, your hair will dry out which as we know leads to frizz. Go for washing 2 to 3 times per week max.

6. Regular use of Hot Tools such as a hair dryer, straightener or curling iron will defiantly put pressure on your hair. Once damaged we are again opening ourselves up for frizz.Try being mindful how many times you are using your hot tools – as your hair gets in better shape you may find the need to straighten is less. When you do straighten it is essential you use a heat protect spray to create a protective layer on your hair before applying heat.

7. Lack of Regular Trims – if you don’t have your hair cut for a long period of time you may find split ends form. These rough and dry ends will be a cause of frizziness. It is essential  you get a trim every 6 weeks to keep your ends in check.

8. Sulphates in shampoo have been shown to strip hair of its natural protective oils which keep moisture in. Choose a sulphate free shampoo and conditioner that contains as many natural ingredients as possible to help protect your hair. STEP 1 | LESS IS BEST

With curls use small amounts of product. You’d be surprised at how many people use far too much product as they think they need more with curly hair.

When using any product with your curls a little goes a long way.  Distribute product evenly throughout the hair. Using too much can result in heavy looking curls that are lifeless.

Try it, you’ll be astounded by the results, and the bonus is your product will last longer!!

STEP 2 | AVOID SULPHATES

We take the cleansing of our hair as a basic grooming step, but with curls it is important to avoid all shampoos with sulphates.

Sulphate shampoos can be too harsh for curly hair and tend to rob the hair of moisture, which curly hair needs lots of. The residue of sulphate shampoos causes friction leading to frizziness.

STEP 3 | SHAMPOO LESS & TIME TO TAME

It’s best not to shampoo every day with curls, shampoo less often but when you do always use a moisture infused conditioner or mask. 

STEP 4 | DIFFUSE THE SITUATION

Diffusers are a curly girls best friend. Try one, you won’t regret it.
